The Crest Gem of the Lankaramaya Dagaba Adorned

The meritorious task of adornment of the crest gem on the LankaramayaDagaba at Anuradhapura was held with great festivity under the guidance of Ven. RalapanaweDhammajothi Nayaka Thero on the 10.06.2013 with the participation of Atamasthanadhipathi Ven. Dr. PallegamaSiriniwasa Nayaka Thero and other dignitaries.

LankaramaDagaba has been built during 89-77 BC by King Walagamba. Within a short period of the king coming to the power for the first time, a Dravidian invader has fought with the king and ceased the throne. To make it easier for the king to flee the enemies, his queen Soma (Lanka Devi) has got off the horse carriage at this place which was called 'Galhebekada', according to the chronicles. Because of the esteemed sacrifice made by this great queen Lanka Devi for the benefit of the country, the king managed to escape.However, the pregnant queen was captured by the enemies.

Ven. Gnanadarshana Thero of Bomaluwa Temple receives Higher Ordination

Ven. Kirinde Gnanadarshana Samanera Thero dwelling at the Bomaluwa Temple of Anuradhapura Mahaviharaya received the 'Upasampada' Higher Ordination on the 28th June. Ven. Thero received the higher precept at the 'Seema Malaka' precincts of Malwatta Mahavihara, Kandy, under the guidance of Most Ven. Dr. Pallegama Siriniwasa Atamasthanadhipahi Nayaka Thero. Examined by the Most Venerable Maha theros, Ven. Gnanadarshana Thero displayed his knowledge in the Thripitaka Dhamma through his verbal answers to the difficult questions.

Atamasthanadhipathi Nayaka Thero decorated with Honorary Degree

Ven. Dr. Pallegama Siriniwasa Nayaka Thero was esteemed with the 'Vidyodaya Dharma Shastra Vibhushana' honorary degree offered by the Vidyodaya Maha Pirivena on the 25th of April.

This honorary degree was offered to the Nayaka Thero felicitating the academic and religious service rendered by him. The venerable thero born on 02nd January 1953, was ordained on 09th May 1968 at the Udamaluwa temple of Anuradhapura. His higher ordination was received on 06th May 1975 from the Malwatta chaptor of the Shyamopali Maha Nikaya and the first digree was obtained in 1987 from the University of Kelaniya. In 2005 he received his PhD from the Chulalongkorn University of Thailand. In 2012, the government of Miyanmar honoured the Nayaka Thero with the honorary digree of 'Sadhdhamma Jothika Dhaja'.

Ven. Siriniwasa Nayaka Thero who became the Atamasthanadhipathi of Anuradhapura in 1997, holds this esteemed post to the date. The Vidyodaya Pirivena of Maligakanda, Colombo states that, the invaluable religious and academic service rendered by the venerable Nayaka Thero as the incumbent of the Anuradhapura Mahaviharaya as well as the physical and spiritual development achieved at the Mahaviharaya including the Anuradhapura Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi and the Atamasthanaya.

Aluth Sahal Mangalyaya held with great festivity

Aluth Sahal Mangalyaya, the New Harvest Ceremony for the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi of Anuradhapura, was held under the leadership of HE the President Mahinda Rajapaksha with great festivity on 07th April, in front of the sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi.

The traditional overnight chanting of Pirith was held during the 06th night in a Pirith Mandapa in front of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi. The Maha Sangha was offered with alms in the 07th morning.

At the dawn of 07th, pots of milk were traditionally boiled over at the four gates of the Bodhi to convey the merit to the gods by the Villidura people, the caretakers of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi.

Restoration of the old Dharma Shala at Ruwanweli Maha Dagaba

The restoration work of the old Dharma Shala at the Ruwanweli Maha Dagaba was begun recently. The roof was dilapidated and the walls were weak in this more than a century old Dharma Shala. This was causing various problems for the various religious ceremonies and Dhamma talks held at the Ruwanweli Mahaviharaya.

Anuradhapura Mahaviharaya Main Building Is Nearing Completion

The first stage of the project of recreating the Mahaviharaya, the construction of the Maha Viharaya Building Complex has been progressing steadily. Thereby, the construction of the main building, the Block A has reached its finishing stages. This main building comprises of the Shrine Room, Mahaviharaya Library, Conference Hall for the Ven. Bhikkhus, the official rooms for the Ven. Maha Nayaka and Ven. Anunayaka Theros, the dorms for the visiting Maha Sangha, rest rooms for the foreign delegates and toilet facilities, etc.

The annual great meritorious task of whitewashing the Ruwanweli Maha Dagaba was begun at the auspicious time under the leadership of Atamasthanadhipathi Ven. Dr. Pallegama Siriniwasa Nayaka Thero with the participation of the incumbent of the Swarnamali Chaithyarama, Ven. Pallegama Hemarathana Nayaka Thero. Since the ancient times, the whitewashing of this great Dagaba was done using the native technologies according to the traditions.

A Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi Sapling planted in Western Australia

A sacred sapling of the Anuradhapura Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi was ceremonially planted with great festivity at the Dhammasara Buddhist Nuns Monastery of Western Australia on 25th November 2012. The sacred Bodhi sapling was donated by Atamasthanadhipathi Ven. Dr. Pallegama Siriniwasa Nayaka Thero in November 2011, on a request made by the Bhikkhunies Ven. Nirodha and Ven. Hassapangna, the Co-abbots of the Dhammasara Nuns Monastery.

Anuradhapura Maha Viharaya being reconstructed

The Anuradhapura Maha Viharaya will be rebuilt as a 'Panchawasa' containing 5 sections, according to the ancient architecture of the Anuradhapura era. The main building named as the Block B of the building plan will be constructed first. The construction work begun after a special pooja ceremony held in the night of the 06th May with the leadership of the Atamasthanadhipathi Nayaka Thero. The construction work was inaugurated at an auspicious time in the early morning of 07th May by Mr.K.M.I. Swarnasinghe, the secretary to the Maha Viharaya Foundation. The construction work of the Block B is expected to be completed within 07 months. The expenditure for this block alone is estimated to be
