A set of Silver Bowls were offered for the Buddha Pooja at the main shrine room at the Anuradhapura Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi. Mrs. Namalika Yahampath of Kottawa, Pannipitiya offered this specially created set of Silver Bowls for merits in the name of her late father to Atamasthanadhipathi Most Ven. Dr. Pallegeme Siriniwasa Nayaka Thero at the Mahaviharaya yesterday.
The Navam Follmoon Poyaday Dana Seela Bhawana religious programme of the Anuradhapura Mahaviharaya was held on the 3rd of February with much success. This programme held at the Sannipatha Shala under the shade of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi was participated by over ten thousand devotees.
At 6.00am, the devotees were placed on the Eight Precepts at the main shrine room by Ven. Kanubichchiye Rathanasiri Thero. The morning Buddha Pooja was held at 6.30am. And at 7.00am, the morning Dana was offered to the devotees.
The monthly Dana, Seela and Bhavana religious porgramme of the Anuradhapura Mahaviharaya has been subjected to the appreciation of the devotees. This was proved by the participation of tens of thousands of devotees from all over the island.
The number of requests to sponsor for various items in this religious programme is going up daily. The intension of the Atamasthanadhipathi Most Ven. Dr. Pallegama Siriniwasa Nayaka Thero was to conduct this programme with the sponsorship of the Mahaviharaya for the benefit of the devotees. However, considering the appeals for participating in this great meritorious task, the organization committee has decided to allow the devotees to sponsor only for the 2 Dhamma Talks and the 'Dam Sabha Mandapaya'. This sponsorship may be obtained individually or as a group and the sponsoring devotees are expected to participate in this religious programme.
HE President Maithreepala Sirisena paid a visit to Anuradhapura Mahaviharaya for the first time after becoming the president of Sri Lanka and paid homage to the Atamasthanadhipathi Ven. Dr. Pallegama Siriniwasa Nayaka Thero. The Incumbent Theros of the Atamasthana Temples, Ven. Pallegama Hemarathana, Ven. Eethalawetunuwewe Gnanathilaka, Ven. Dr. Kallanchiye Rathanasiri , Ven. Relapanawe Dhammajothi and Ven. Ihalahalmillewe Rathanapala Nayaka Theros participated in this event.
The initial programme of the 'Monthly Meditation Programme Series' of the Anuradhapura Mahaviharaya will be conducted at the 'Sannipatha Shala' on the 25th January 2015. It has been organized to continue this programme every month thereafter. Under the advice, guidance and supervision of the Atamasthanadhipathi Ven. Dr. Pallegama Siriniwasa Nayaka Thero, this meditation programme will be conducted by the veteran instructor of meditation Ven. Ranpathwila Wimalarathana (M.A.) Nayaka Thero.
The Duruthu Mangalyaya, the first festival of the year held for veneration of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi was held in front of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi according to the ancient traditions on the Duruthu Fullmoon Poya day of 4th January 2015.
In the evening, the Pooja items including flowers, lamps, betel and incense, etc. were prepared by the Villidura people who attend to the duties of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi. Meanwhile, the venerable Bhikkhus of the Mahaviharaya belonging to the Bomaluwa tradition prepared the other offerings required for the ceremony. As the great bell of the Mahaviharaya was sounded three times at 7.25pm, the Villidura people carried the offerings in a procession to the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi. The venerable Bhikkhus also went in procession to the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi precincts. The great bell in the Third Maluwa rang continuously.
The 'Duruthu Fullmoon Day' Programme of the monthly Dana, Seela and Bhavana Programme of the Anuradhapura Mahaviharaya was held on Sunday the 04th January, commencing the year 2015. Tens of thousands of devotees from all over the island participated in this religious programme.
Ven. Kanubichchiye Rathanasiri Thero of the Bomaluwa Temple placed the devotees upon the eight precepts at 6.00am. The morning Buddha Pooja was held as usual at 6.30am at the main Buddha shrine room. Afterwards, the morning Dana was offered to the devotees at 7.00am.
At 8.00am, the first Dhamma Talk of the day on the topic of "What is the Kusala?" was delivered by Prof. Hanguranketha Dheerananda Thero of the History Dept. of the University of Peradeniya. At the end of the Dhamma Talk, the devotees had the opportunity to raise their questions in Dhamma.
The 600th episode of the 'Doramandalawa' cultural television programme of the Independent Television Network, popular among the viewers as an intellectual discussion was dedicated to the Anuradhapura Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi. This programme televised under the shade of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, was participated by the scholars Atamasthanadhipathi Most Ven. Dr. Pallegama Siriniwasa Nayaka Thero, Incumbent of the Abhayagiriya Chaithyaramaya Ven. Dr. Kallanachiye Rathanasiri Nayaka Thero, Senior Prof. Sumanapala Galmangoda and Dr. K.M.I. Swarnasinghe. The programme was directed by the Senior Media Personality Dr. Hasantha Hettiarachchi. This special episode of the Doramandalawa Programme was telecasted over ITN Sri Lanka on 01st Dec. and 06th Dec.
A special Dhamma Talk was held under the shade of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi of Anuradhapura on the Unduwap Fullmoon Poya Day, commemorating the ceremonial bringing of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi to Sri Lanka by Arahant Sanghamitta Maha Theri. Prof. Ven. Thumbulle Seelakkhanda Nayaka Thero, Vice Chancellor of the Anuradhapura Bhikshu University delivered the Dhamma Talk. Afterwards, a special Dhamma Discussion was held participated by Ven. Pallegama Hemarathana (B.A.) Nayaka Thero, Incumbent of the Swarnamali Maha Chaithyaramaya, Ven. Kapugollewe Rathanasiri (B.A.) Thero and Mr. M.V. Dhanapala, Retired Principal.
Unduwap Fullmoon Poya Day is the day on which the southern branch of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi of India was ceremonially brought to Sri Lanka by Arahant Sanghamitta Maha Theri and planted at the Mahaviharaya in the Mahamevna Royal Park in Anuradhapura 2,250 years ago. Therefore, it is considered as a special Poya Day for the Sri Lankan Buddhists. Accordingly, this month's Dana, Seela and Meditation Programme of the Mahaviharaya was themed upon the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi.
