Offering sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi saplings to foreign countries

Occurring sacred Bodhi saplings from the esteemed Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi of Anuradhapura is very rare. A very limited number of such sacred Bodhi saplings are offered to the Buddhist temples in the foreign countries as a custom. These Bodhi saplings are offered to foreign countries following the traditions followed through the history since the ancient times.

The first step would be to make a formal written request by the venerable chief monk of the temple in the foreign country from Most Ven. Atamasthanadhipathi Nayaka Thero of Anuradhapura Mahaviharaya asking for a sacred Bodhi sapling. This letter should be forwarded on an official letterhead together with a brief description of the temple bearing the signature of the chief monk of the said temple.

Once this letter of request is received, Anuradhapura Mahaviharaya will reply describing the traditional procedure followed in offering a sacred Bodhi sapling to a foreign country. After receiving a written confirmation from the said temple that these customs could be fulfilled, Anuradhapura Mahaviharaya may approve the offering of a sacred Bodhi sapling, if available. Afterwards, an invitation will be sent to the venerable chief monk of the temple, inviting to arrive at Anuradhapura Mahaviharaya on a suitable given date in order to receive the sacred Bodhi sapling according to the traditions.

When a sacred sapling occurred from the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi is offered to a foreign country, an official declaration confirming that will be issued from the Anuradhapura Mahaviharaya. This declaration is issued at the Bodhi planting ceremony after being read and signed by Most Ven. Atamasthanadhipathi Nayaka Thero in front of all.
